This isn’t the first Thanksgiving Weekend playoff game for the Sentinels. Ironically, it was the first ever trip to the playoffs that saw the Sentinels still playing at the end of November.

It was 8 years ago this weekend that the Sentinels, led by Corey Lynch, waltzed into Fort Meade for a playoff game. That year, we won our first two playoff games to advance to the regional semifinal where the Sentinels lost to a Jamal Cornelius-led squad in a first ever meeting with the Miners. The Sentinels look to raise the Thanksgiving record to 1-1 and advance to the State’s final-four for the first time in school history, as they take on Out-of-Door Academy at Sarasota High School. The Sentinels lost to the Thunder earlier in the season 39-28.

Friday night had little post-season meaning for either the Sentinels or the Eagles of Calvary Christian. Both teams will hit the road to play the opening round of the playoffs the following week and the game would not change that one way or the other. But as the game started and progressed, it became clear that there would be no half-hearted effort on the field of play as the two teams combined for 95 points in a Calvary 49-46 victory.

In the process, ECS’s Colton Lynch set a Lee County season record for All-Purpose Yards from scrimmage. This vaults him to the top of an elite group of Lee County high school athletes; names such as, Noel Devine and Ernest Graham, to name a few. Lynch has rushed for 1,351 yards this season and has passed for 1,527 yards for a combined total of 2,878 yards, eclipsing Parsons’ former record of 2,742 yards in 2007.

Congratulations to Colton and to all of the Sentinels for a fine season. Good luck in the playoffs!

Last year the Sophomore class became the first underclassmen to win the coveted Powder Puff game. This year as Juniors, they entered the night as the favorites to repeat, but don’t tell that to the Senior girls.

In the first quarter, the Seniors took on the Freshmen, which ended in a tie. The Seniors won in OT to advance to the championship quarter. The second quarter sported much of the same, as the Sophomores and Juniors played to a tie score, which was broken and unchallenged when the Juniors scored and advanced to an all upper-class showdown in the final. The third quarter consolation was dominated by the high powered Sophomore girls who soundly defeated the Freshmen Ladies, 21-0, to claim third place.

In the Championship quarter, the Seniors took the opening possession and drove down the field for a 7-0 lead. After the Juniors turned it over on downs, it appeared that the Seniors would ice the game with the running clock ticking down, but the Seniors turned it over on downs and a few plays later, the Juniors had tied the game at 7, which sent the game into the third OT of the night. On the first possession of OT, the Junior girls struggled, and on 4th down were stopped on the 1 yard line. On the ensuing possession, the Senior’s Jenna Lobbestael ran it in from ten yards out to give the Seniors an exciting victory!

Congratulations to the Seniors!

The Homecoming game is this Friday night. Kickoff is at 7:30 and the pregame on Redzone Radio is at 7:00. Tune in or come to the game to see the crowning of the King and Queen and the homecoming court.
